Obituary of Mary C. Cretella

Mary C. Cretella of Bedford passed away on July 7, 2020. She was 92 years old. Mary is survived by her four children: Ben Lavine of Lowell, David Lavine and his wife Barbara of Bedford, Emily Lavine of Acton, and Kenneth Lavine and his wife Leeann of Southwick. Mary was the grandmother to eight grandchildren: Marc, Steven, Jeannette, Melissa, Max, James, Patience and Wyatt, and the great-grandmother to Alexsandra (Sasha). Mary is also survived by two brothers, Joseph Cretella and his wife Norma of Pepperell and Thomas Cretella of NH. Mary was predeceased by her brother Henry Cretella and her sister Anne-Louise Glynn. Mary was born on April 18th, 1928 in Lawrence to the late Catherine (Toscano) Cretella and the late Lewis E. Cretella. Mary attended public schools in Lawrence and was valedictorian of her high school class. After graduating from high school, Mary went on to attend MIT and graduated in 1949 earning a degree in Chemistry (one of two women who graduated from MIT that year). Mary worked in the field of Chemistry and enjoyed a long, invigorating, and respected professional career, holding several patents. Mary began her professional career at Ionics Inc. and remained until 1955. She then worked at MIT Lincoln Lab until 1977 and also worked at MIT from 1962 until 1976. In 1973, Mary worked on Skylab I on the very successful Indium-Antimonide project for NASA. Her work on this project was recognized by President Ford in 1974. The majority of the remaining balance of her career was spent in the solar energy field, in which she was involved in the development and growth of materials needed for manufacturing photovoltaic cells. Mary was a curious, bright, and impassioned scientist who brought energy and skill to all of her work settings. Mary thrived on hosting large family gatherings and truly enjoyed preparing ridiculous amounts of food for dear family and beloved friends. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, mystery novels, and crossword puzzles (the REALLY challenging ones, which she completed in pen). Mary - smart, creative, hard-working, multi-talented, stubborn, fiercely independent, caring, and kind - will be sorely missed by her family friends. Visiting hours were held Tuesday July 14, 2020 in Shawsheen Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday July 15th in St. Michael’s Church in Bedford. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
