Emily Kohm

Obituary of Emily Kraus Kohm

Emily Kraus Kohm was born Emily Rose Kraus at home in Liverpool, PA on October 7, 1937 to her parents, Franz Kraus and Emily Brunner. She was the youngest of four daughters and the family moved often prior to settling in Camden, NJ. She graduated from Camden Catholic High School in 1955. Upon graduation she went to secretarial school and was hired by RCA Corporation. She enjoyed travelling and went to Ireland in her early 20’s. Her friends would often drive up on weekends to New York City to go dancing. A dance is how she met her husband, James R. Kohm - together they could clear the dance floor. Their love of travel continued as they honeymooned in Bermuda and returned close to ten times. They also went to Italy and in 1974 to Portugal where they were stuck during the country’s revolution. They took family vacations in Vermont, NH, and Disney World. In later years, they would go to Newport Beach, RI and spent a month outside of Tampa every winter. In her younger years Emily was a majorette leading the band. She loved a good parade and in Vermont she was in charge of making the float for the 4th of July. She also loved to walk and could circle the entire Lake Morey which was five miles - she might even do it twice in a given day. Even in her late 60’s she walked home from Lexington on more than one occasion. She would say “When we grew up in Camden, we didn’t have a car so we walked everywhere.” In Lexington, she might stop off at her favorite store The Fancy Flea. There is no truth to the rumor that she was a part-owner. She enjoyed collectibles as Emily and Jim had an extensive Hummel collection. She also could not pass up a penny or any coin if she saw one on the ground. That was Emily’s lucky money. Emily also had a great sense of humor and was not above participating in a practical joke. She was also very open-minded with people and she studied numerous religions. Emily and Jim came to Bedford in 1964 on a job transfer and they settled on Beverly Road where they lived for 55 years. She volunteered for a variety of Bedford clubs over the years and at local hospitals. Emily may have enjoyed working part-time for the weather service the most. Emily passed away on August 2, 2020. She is survived by her four sons: Michael and his wife Nichelle of Louisville, CO; Douglas of Acton; Philip and his wife Shannon of Glendale, AZ; and Jason and his wife Kim of Litchfield, NH. Emily had great joy with her four granddaughters, Jillian, Lauren, Jaya and Rachel. She also had a deep fondness of her grandson, Carlos. She is also survived by her sister Joyce Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim - October 6, 2020 would have been their 60th anniversary. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Claire Duffy and Joan Murphy. In addition to her own children and grandchildren it brought Emily great joy to see the children of the neighborhood and her nieces/nephews. One friend recently said “When my child was born, your Mom was one of the first people I took her to meet.” Due to Covid-19, it is hopeful that a memorial service for both Em and Jim will take place in March of 2021.
