Obituary of Joan L. Pfeiffer
Joan L. (Locke) Pfeiffer, age 91 of Wilmington and formerly of Melrose, Bedford, Brewster, Chelmsford and Tewksbury passed away peacefully on January 7, 2021 after a brief illness, a victim of Covid-19. She was the widow of former Bedford Town Clerk and Town Accountant Donald W. Pfeiffer with whom she shared 53 years of marriage. She was the beloved mother of Cheryl Gustafson of Wilmington and Kenneth Pfeiffer and his wife Susan of Nashua, NH. She also leaves many grandchildren, and great-grand children, cousins, nieces and nephews. She loved them all and was very proud of each and every one. Born in Everett daughter of the late G. Grant Locke and Ruth M. (Dunnells) Locke, she was raised in Melrose and was a member of the 1947 graduating class of Melrose High School. She took art lessons and her drawings done with pencils had more the appearance of photographs than drawings. In the early 1950s while taking classes in Boston at American Institute of Banking, she met her husband. They married and settled in his native Bedford where soon after, she became a charter member of the First Baptist Church, at that time worshiping in the basement of the old library building. After raising her family in Bedford, she and her husband moved to Brewster where she enjoyed a family heritage of nearly 400 years. Her late brother and his wife also lived in town which was the source of much joy. Regular in her attendance at Brewster Baptist Church, she looked forward to the widow’s group weekly lunch and enjoyed playing Mahjong with another weekly group. She enjoyed reading, baking pies, and playing cards with the family, particularly Hearts or Cape Cod Rummy. After leaving the Cape, she continued playing Mahjong with groups from Billerica and Wilmington. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Tewksbury. In her declining years, she lived with her devoted daughter Cheryl who attended to her every need and her days were often brightened by the phone calls she would receive from family members, near and far. She will be remembered for never forgetting the birthday of a friend or member of her family. A Graveside Service was held in Shawsheen Cemetery on Wednesday, January 13, 2021. Memorial contributions in Joan's name may be made to Sawtelle Family Hospice House, 320 Haverhill St. Reading, MA 01867.
