Obituary of David Ruble Hill

David Ruble Hill passed away peacefully on June 29, 2021 in Bedford. He was born October 19, 1936 in “Little” Washington, Pennsylvania and was the son of the late Heston McKinley Hill and Grace Dorsey - he was the youngest of four children. Music and education were two of the major themes that ran throughout his life. While majoring in music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he met Virginia “Ginny” Permelia Stoner, who was also studying music. They began their 62-year marriage together right after graduation. Dave and Ginny lived in many places during their life together. David was in the U.S. Army for several years after college so the first destination was Fort Lee, Virginia where daughter Debbie was born. They also lived in Fort Benning, GA; Washington, PA; State College, PA (three times); Clarence, NY where daughter Judy was born; Raleigh, NC; Chapel Hill, NC; and finally, in Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford. During his career, David was an English Teacher, High School guidance counselor, Director of Vocational Education, Manager of a homeowners’ association, and Church Music Director. He earned his Master’s degree at Penn State and his EdD at North Carolina State. His avocation in music started as a drum major in the high school band, and included many performances in college musicals, a position as music director in the U.S. Army, and as the choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in Clarence for 25 years. He sang in many church and other vocal groups and performed with daughter, Judy, at Carleton-Willard where they sang many of the old songs from musicals. David had a beautiful tenor voice and is remembered by friends for his moving solos and stirring interpretations. He is survived by daughter Debbie Day, her husband Steve and their sons Stuart and Spencer in Pittsburgh, PA; and his daughter Judy Bose and her daughter Kamala in Carlisle. While they grieve his loss and will miss him greatly, they cherish their many memories. David was preceded in death by his wife Ginny who passed away less than seven months before him, in December of 2020; son-in-law Vanu Bose in 2017, and a great-grandson Dawson.
