Obituary of Arthur Leo McManus, Sr.
Arthur Leo McManus, Sr. 90, of Burlington and formerly of Bedford, died on March 19, 2019 with family by his side.
Mr. McManus was born in Worcester on November 24, 1928, the son of Bernard and Katherine McManus and loving brother of the late John (Jack) and Bernard James McManus.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Doris Marie (Girard); and devoted children, Lisa and her partner Rosanne Sliney, Peter, Thomas, Timothy and his wife Wendy, Mary-Jo and her husband Ron Bereszniewicz, and Arthur L. Jr. and his wife Deborah.
Cherished grandfather of Sean, Ryan, Timothy (TJ), Brittney, Arthur L. III,(AJ) Jack, and Meghan McManus; Billy and Casey Bereszniewicz; and Sarah and Adam Collins. He was the great-grandfather of Braelyn, Camdyn, and Finn.
Arthur served in the US Navy during WWII and went on to Boston University under a full athletic scholarship where he obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physical Education. While attending BU he was on the Men’s swim and wrestling teams.
He worked for the Town of Bedford for 35 years in various positions as a Physical Education teacher, coach, Athletic Director and Director of Recreation. He was one of the original founders of Wedgewood Swim and Tennis Club and Manager of the club for over 30 years. Arthur was a long-time Member of the Lexington Golf Club and an inductee of the Bedford High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He was a remarkable, kind, and wonderful man who will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Visiting hours will be held in Shawsheen Funeral Home on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 5pm to 8pm.
A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Michael's Church, 90 Concord Road, Bedford on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 11am. A Celebration of Life will be held following the Memorial Mass at Waxy O'Connor's, 94 Hartwell Avenue, Lexington from noon till 4pm.
Family and friends are invited.
